18 Email List Building Strategies to Grow Your Business

US consumers will spend $523 billion online by 2020.

$523 billion: how will you tap into it?

Email marketing is an extremely powerful tool for engaging your audience. If you want to grow your business, your email list is a good place to start. Each email address in your database represents interest in your brand – and a potential conversion. A good email list building strategy is therefore something that every business needs. Look no further – we’ve compiled our top list building tips. Let’s go!

How to build an email list: What are the best platforms?

1. Website

It sounds like an obvious one, but your website is the first place to start building your email list. Place your newsletter subscribe form somewhere visible, and preferably on the pages that your website visitors are most likely to end up on.

2. Blog

Your blog is another great opportunity to expand your email list. Place a subscription box on your blog page like so:

and in each post to increase your odds of getting more subscribers:

If you don’t enjoy writing, you might want to use another platform you’re comfortable with.

You could run a podcast or produce videos to build your email list. Whichever option you choose, giving away quality content on a regular basis helps to grow your subscriber list. People who read your blog are already showing an interest in your brand and your content – the chances are, they would be open to joining your email list too.

They are also much more likely to buy your products.

Paid options:

3. Don’t buy email lists

Never, ever.

“But it’s so tempting!”, you might think.

Here’s the deal:

First of all, it might be illegal. Aside from that, it is not a sustainable email list building strategy – and could hurt your business in the long run. How come? Read my blog post on how to avoid spam filters and email blacklists. Basically, buying email lists is a waste of money – and by no means a long-term solution.

4. Ads on topic-related platforms

Everyone goes for Facebook ads. Surely they work.

But your money could also be spent on advertising your product to a community – not a random set of people For example, John Lee Dumas runs a podcast called Entrepreneur on Fire. If you have a great product that will make an entrepreneur’s life easy, you can hit him up there. His episodes cover all things entrepreneurial and he boasts a loyal audience. His September listens totaled more than 1 million. John even recently published a useful blog post about podcast sponsorships.

5. Native advertising

Native advertising is basically the sweet spot between publishing content and advertising – and can work wonders for building your email list.

Doesn’t it all fit perfectly together?

It’s a great tool to expand your email list.

6. Paid search ads

Paid search is a great way to gather prospective clients.

Display your ads to users who are likely to need your product or service. If they click through to your website, you are one step closer to getting their email address.

7. Social media ads

You’ve surely heard of Facebook ads, but there are other social media platforms that can build your email list fast.

For example, Instagram has seen exponential growth.

It boasts 500 million monthly active users and 300 million daily active users.

These are pretty powerful numbers.

40% of worldwide internet users have bought goods online.

So how do you get visitors on your email list?

Below you’ll find more actionable tips for building your email list. Remember to use more than one.

For optimal results, you should give users more than one chance to sign up. You know you offer a great product, but they don’t know it yet.

8. Pop-ups

If you’re going for a newsletter pop-up, please make it page-specific.

Why would you create a generic pop-up like everyone else if you could really stand out by making it page-specific?

Language matters, too. Make your offer sound exclusive and use the active voice. Who wants to receive “free updates” (what does an update even entail?) if they can get access to “special offers”? Frame your registration offer in a way that presents a clear choice for your users. What sounds more enticing?

Exciting pop-ups will quickly expand your email list.

9. Integrate a registration form into your website

What content management system do you use?

If you’re using:

you can download and install an email marketing plug-in that will allow you to insert a registration form directly onto your website. Take a look at the Newsletter2Go plug-in center.

If you can’t find a plug-in or would like to build your own, you’ll have to write the HTML code yourself (or use an online helper) and then insert it into your site.

Alternatively, if you are a WordPress user, you can:

  1. Use the form editor to simply create a registration form directly on your website. Upload this information easily to your Newsletter2Go account.
  2. Take advantage of the Newsletter2Go WordPress plug-in. It allows you to import customizable registration forms onto your website.

Registration information is automatically imported into your Newsletter2Go account.

All you need to do to expand your email list is to install a plug-in.

10. Content presentation

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Content presentation matters.

Here’s what Brian Dean does to convert page visitors into subscribers.

“As I’m sure you’ve seen yourself, lame pitches like “sign up for our newsletter” and “download our whitepaper” aren’t effective anymore.

To put it another way, you really need to sell your content upgrade.

Here’s the approach that worked best for me.

First, I added a yellow box at the end my blog post introduction:

My old blog post conclusion asked people to leave a comment. I swapped that conclusion out with a pitch to download the checklist:

When someone clicks on the link in the yellow box or the download image at the end of the post, a LeadPages box appears that asks them to opt-in:

According to my analytics, 65% of people that see that box enter their email and opt-in.”

Pretty powerful tip to build your email list, isn’t it?

11. Use the right double opt-in provider

This is perhaps one of the most important tips when it comes to list building.

You don’t want to carefully craft a perfect opt-in page… and then see your subscription confirmation emails land in spam.Your potential subscribers might never join your list, because your email is classified as spam. And they forget about you.

You don’t want this happen to you. Newsletter2Go sends emails via whitelisted servers.

That means, that we can boast a 99% delivery rate. Which means you will expand your email list.

12. Make the sign-up page appealing

You have to admit:

“In order to complete the subscription process, simply check your inbox and click on the link in the email we have just sent you”

It doesn’t sound very appealing, does it?

It doesn’t show any promise of future benefits. Ultimately, the user doesn’t care about building your email list – they care about benefits. Use this space to remind them of the advantages they can get by subscribing to your newsletter. Create a subscription page tailored to your corporate design.

13. Surprise

Everyone loves surprises.

All your subscribers expect is to confirm their email address and to return to whatever they were doing. But then they receive a bonus. A limited time offer.

They have to act, right?

Send them a bonus, a code. Give them a pleasant surprise.

Give your subscribers the option to share and forward your emails.

Include social sharing and email to friend buttons in your marketing emails. It’s an easy and effective way to gain more subscribers.

14. Organize a contest…

…where everybody is a winner.

No one can resist a free giveaway, so this is a foolproof email list building strategy.

All they need to do is:

  • sign up with their email address
  • post something on a social medium of your choice
  • tag your website / use a specific hashtag

Then announce the winner and surprise every single entrant by giving a limited-time promo offer.

Everybody loves surprises, remember?

15. Facebook

Leverage the opportunity to add a call-to-action button on your Facebook Business Page.

17. LinkedIn

Share offers on your LinkedIn Company Page or in group discussions relevant to your business.

18. Twitter

Before you host one, make sure you participate in a few of them to get a feel for how they work.

Before you get started, make sure you have optimized your bio.
